Fast, casual meals in the Village(s) without the need to visit a chain restaurant and without breaking the bank.

Go! Go! Curry!

If you're looking for sushi, head somewhere else, but if you're craving that ubiquitous pork cutlet affectionately known as tonkatsu Japan, then Go! Go! Curry! is your spot. There are three outlets in the city and each one features beloved Yankee outfielder Hideki Matsui, not only a NYC favorite, but also of Kanazawa where the owner hails from as well. Here, the curry is slow-cooked for 55 minutes, then allowed the same amount of time to mature. The result is a rich, thick curry ready to top a traditional pork cutlet, or the other choices such as chicken, shrimp and sausage. Sizes and prices also follow a baseball theme, from taking a 'Walk' to the 'Grand Slam', your team always wins.

273 West 38th Street, New York, NY, United States, 10018
Japonica

This neighborhood sushi spot has been around since 1978 and through those years, it has seen many spots come and go, especially with the constant onslaught of NYU land-grabs. Nonetheless, it remains in the Village for a reason. The menu has all the usual rolls, sashimi and other teriyaki options; two other reasons for its longevity include moderate prices and convenience to Union Square.

Tompkins Square Bagels

Located just north of the Tompkins Square Park on Avenue A, Tompkins Square Bagels offers all things bagel related. The area was overdue for a fully functioning bagel shop and now it has one that features a locally created mosaic sign above to welcome all. The choice of bagels and spreads, with such standards as salt or onion to go with lox, whitefish, or scallion, among others, is fairly extensive. Lines tend to come and go with peaks and valleys throughout the day. Seating in the back is functional for small groups. TSB also features a range of drinks including coffee and teas as well as some other dry goods available on shelves for purchase. There's a little outdoor space in the back that could be a nice retreat from the city in the summer. For a smorgasbord of bagel delights, check it out. -Wynne Boelt

McNulty's Tea & Coffee Company

Although the ownership has changed several times along the way, this old-fashioned coffee and tea shop has continued to peddle its goods for over a century. Located on historic Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, McNulty's Tea & Coffee Company stands out among the newer bars and shops there and serves as a reminder of what this neighborhood used to be. In addition to over 90 different types of coffees and over 100 teas, the store sells coffee accessories, candy and gifts.

Mamoun's Falafel

Since 1971, Mamoun's has been the spot to go when you need true falafel and shwarma made with tender loving care. Upon entering, Mamoun's staff is sure to remind you that they are one of the oldest Middle Eastern restaurants in the city and many locals claim the falafel here to be the best. Mamoun's has few other locations in the Tri-State area, rest assured however that each one maintains the highest quality ingredients and a strict adherence to tradition.

119 MacDougal Street, New York, NY, United States, 10012
Lenny's Ultimate Sandwich

Lenny's is a fast and authentic NY style delicatessen that has outlets all over Manhattan. This particular one is located on 6th Ave. and 9th St. and it prepares all of the favorites just as deliciously as the other locations do. Favorites are the pastrami and roast beef, but there isn't a bad sandwich in the place. With more than 1000 different combos, it is hard to run out of combinations to try.

418 6th Ave., New York, NY, United States, 10011
Washington Square Diner

This nondescript 24-hr. diner located on 4th Street in the Village has been here since time immemorial. As other venues come and go, the Washington Square Diner has remained here since the 60's and still serves late night grub which may or may not entirely agree with you after a night of drinking in one of the pubs nearby. Prices are relatively cheap and the ambiance is classic Americana, with greasy burgers, kitschy artwork and surly attitudes that provide the highlights.

150 West 4th Street, New York, NY, United States, 10012
Bleecker Street Pizza

This no-frills, unpretentious pizzeria in the West Village is the spot to grab your slice on the go. They use real parmagiano on every slice and most of their pies are of the classic, thin variety, however they do have a thick and hearty Sicilian pie for those with bigger appetites. In addition to pizza, they also have massive calzones, heroes and salads; right off the Christopher St. subway stop, Bleecker Street Pizza is the place to go if you are in a hurry, but don't want to sacrifice flavor.

69 7th Avenue South, New York, NY, United States, 10014
Dumpling Man

As the name suggests, Dumpling Man doles out fried or steamed little tasty dumplings. Choose your stuffing from chicken, pork, vegetables, calamari, or prawns and top them with tasty sauces in this cramped space on St. Mark's Place. The clientele usually consists of students, visitors, regulars, and others looking for a cheap, yet tasty place to eat. Try the sweet banana or pumpkin dumplings, they are perfect for munching on-the-go in the busy city.
