Varsos Cafe & Bakery

This fine old Athenian establishment dates back to 1892, when Kifissia was a summer resort first opening up to the city's inhabitants through the new electric railway. It retains much of its pre-war atmosphere: the staff in white overalls, the ornate stucco of the ceilings, the handwritten chits for the cashier, all take you back to a vanished age. You can sit and have coffee and cakes (very politely served) in the garden or at tables on the pavement, but the real treat is buying inside, from the glazed cabinets filled with baklava, galaktoboureko (custard tart), tsoureki (brioche), koulourakia (cookies) and other delights. The prices are reasonable and the quality - thanks to a company policy of using only pure, traditional ingredients - unrivalled. - Alex Martin

Cava Vinifera

Greece has seen a wine renaissance in recent years, its producers winning gold and silver medals in worldwide competitions. Panos Zoumboulis is one of the forces behind the change: a top-class winemaker, trained in Bordeaux, he is a consultant for vineyards in Greece and South America, and a fount of knowledge about the grape in all its forms. He and his wife Katerina run this marvelous wine shop, which also sells olive oil from their own land and a variety of other gastronomic and liquorous gifts. As well as stocking an expertly selected range of Greek and foreign wines and spirits, they organize tasting evenings dedicated to single vineyards and weekly wine seminars, with food from the Gefseis restaurant next door (one of the best in the city), which they also own. The staff are knowledgeable, enthusiastic and helpful. - Alex Martin

Loumidis

Your nose will immediately locate the city's oldest coffee store when you pass by the corner of Eolou and Panepistimiou streets. The strong smell of freshly ground coffee will lure you into the store, where you will find what the Greeks traditionally prefer: very strong coffee served in tiny white cups. Beyond the classic blends, Loumidis sells flavored coffee including almond, hazelnut, cinnamon, vanilla, orange and amaretto. The utensils needed to prepare strong Greek coffee—such as the traditional little pots and grinding mills—can be bought at Loumidis. The store also features a tempting selection of first-rate traditional sweets. Among others, you should try the sesame-based pasteli, the loukoumia flavored with honey, roses, almonds or mastic and the mandolata made of almonds.
