Falls Road Local Park is a popular recreational spot in the neighborhood. This sprawling 20-acre (eight-hectare) landscape features a gazebo, several sports fields and amenities, as well as an award-winning playground.
McCrillis Gardens was gifted by William and Virginia McCrillis to the Maryland-National Capital Park in 1978. Since then this beautiful, shade garden has been a gem of a place for nature lovers. You will find perennials and other gorgeous blooms that make this place vibrant with color and life. This garden also features a pavilion and benches.
Spread across 153 acres (61.92 hectares) of lush greenery and landscaped gardens, the Rockville Civic Center Park is a must visit when in the city. Comprising of the Glenview Mansion, Croydon Creek Nature Center, F. Scott Fitzgerald Theater and the Social Hall, this tourist attraction is used for many occasions such as cultural and major events. The Classic Revival mansion built in 1926 is now the home of the Glenview Mansion Art Gallery and is available for conferences, weddings and holiday parties. Formerly the Glenview Farm, the Civic Center Park also has various facilities like picnic tables, nature trails, walking paths, climbing walls, playgrounds, tennis courts, open spaces, grill areas and a wildlife sanctuary. The Glenview Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
Located in Rockville, Fallsgrove park is a charming expanse replete with adequate benches for you to sit and enjoy a serene time here. Come here on a sunny afternoon and indulge in a picnic lunch at one of their many tables. There are numerous walking and hiking trails as well. This 30 acre (12.14 hectare) park also consists of a tennis court and a huge play area for children. The garden plots within the compound are available for rent as well.
A prime concert venue in the city, Veterans Park has played host a number of famous artists, since its inception. Built to commemorate the city's veterans, this sizable park, is a hot-spot for numerous cultural activities, outdoor events and concerts. Featuring gigs and concerts by some of the most popular local and international bands, this is a venue that's always packed with excitement. With big names from the music industry such as Kevin Basiliko, Karen Collins and The Skillets, amongst the list of artists to have performed here, this is truly a main-event stage in the city.
This former amusement park changed its focus from thrilling rides to artistic amusements, many of which are directed at families. A beautiful hand-carved carousel is the only ride still operating in the park, now administered by the National Park Service. Visitors will find plenty of entertainment ranging from performances at the Puppet Company Playhouse to children's stories at the Adventure Theatre. Dances like swing, square-dancing and the waltz, among others, are held at the Spanish Ballroom.
Great Falls Park, straddling both banks of the Potomac River, offers stunning views. The more attractive side of the park lies in Virginia. Rushing whitewater pours through steep, jagged crevices into a narrow gorge. Photographers, hikers, and nature-lovers find much to enjoy here. The park offers many trails, and the towpath of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal parallels the river. Fishing is allowed, but only with a valid permit. Kayaking, canoeing and rafting is recommended for advanced outdoors-men only. The Maryland side also features Great Falls Tavern with displays of canal history. One-hour round trip barge excursions are offered on a restored stretch of the canal from April to November.
The prominent 19th-century architect John Russell Pope, responsible for many notable homes and memorials in Washington, also designed Woodend, the Georgian mansion that currently houses the Audubon Society. Visitors may tour the home, visit its extensive exhibit of North American birds and browse its well-stocked bookstore. Outside, explore the 40 acres of wooded grounds, including a pond, meadows and a well-marked nature trail. Call to get information on the special events and activities sponsored here.
