Buenos Aires Botanical Garden

Nestled amid the buzzing city center, Jardin Botanico gives a charming peek into the green wonders of the Buenos Aires. Designed by renowned French-Argentine architect Carlos Thays, the garden opened its doors to the public in the year 1898. A veritable green lung of the city, the garden is a picturesque conglomeration of three different landscape styles. The symmetry of the 17th Century French gardens meets the vibrancy of the Oriental gardens with rare Asian plants. The Roman gardens, dotted with soaring cypress and poplars, house a rare species of tree, that was found in First Century Roman botanist Pliny the Younger's Apennine mountain villa. A celebration of diverse nature and colorful blooms, the serene park is ornamented with Roman God statuettes amidst water ponds and park benches. Apart from a botanical library and museum, the park has five greenhouses. The biggest of them, made with antique iron and glass and built in Art Nouveau style, belongs to the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889. It has preserved over 2500 tropical plants and is touted to be one of the rarest greenhouses in the world. The garden still has the erstwhile mansion of Carlos Thays, which was built in the year 1881. A labyrinth of landscape and history, the Jardin Botanico has more than just rare plants to offer its visitors.

Foto Ruta

This isn't your ordinary touristic city excursion: Foto-Ruta, an interactive photography tour, brings Buenos Aires to life in a very unique way. Professional Canadian photographer Jocelyn Mandryk and British photography lover Becky Hayes created this tour as a way for both foreigners and locals to experience the city on an intimate and artistic level. Discovering a new neighborhood each week, tour goers undergo a brief orientation, covering the basics in street photography techniques, before they are sent out into the field. Camera in hand, whether it's a professional, amateur or iPhone, and guided by a set of clues and a map, participants embark on a self-guided exploration of Buenos Aires to capture their own interpretations of the city. - Alexandra Lazar

Jardín Japonés

Amidst Palermo lies this lovely oriental park filled with fish ponds, large stands of bamboo, a beautifully crafted arched bridge and a traditional Japanese tearoom. Inaugurated in 1967 by Japanese immigrants, its current layout was designed by famed landscape artist Yasuo Onomata to resemble the surroundings of a Zen temple. The garden's five acres are occupied for the most part by an artificial lake filled with exotic fish. This place feels especially intimate because, unlike most green spaces in Buenos Aires, it's sheltered by thick foliage. The flora is composed of over 150 different species, the majority of which have been brought directly from Japan. - Pablo Waldman
