"A Fascinating History"
This captivating Chiang Mai landmark was commissioned by King Saen Muang Ma in the 14th Century. Although he intended to bury his father's ashes there, construction did not end until the mid-15th Century, under the rule of an entirely different monarch. Wat Chedi Luang famously housed a sacred Thai palladium known as the Emerald Buddha for 84 years before the temple suffered structural damage during an earthquake in 1545. It was reconstructed in 1992 though only the 60-meter (197-foot) foundation of the once 82-meter (269-foot) holy site remains. Between the imposing Thai temple and its serene grounds, Wat Chedi Luang is certainly a can't-miss attraction in Chiang Mai.
