Cusco Cathedral

Built in Gothic-Renaissance style, Cusco Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This cathedral was built between the 16th and 17th century over the foundations of an old Inca Temple known as Kiswarkancha. It is flanked by two smaller churches named Iglesia del Triunfo and The Sagrada Familia. The cathedral features many historical artifacts like the Maria Angola Bell which was cast in 1659, the miraculous black wooden crucifix and Marcos Zapata’s ‘The Last Supper’ which was completed in 1753.

Santo Domingo

The Dominicans were the first Catholic order to arrive in Cusco. They constructed this convent upon Koricancha ("Field of Gold"), the most important Inca sanctuary that was dedicated to the cult of the Sun, and where they stored their mummies. The polished stonewalls, unique in all of Cusco for their quality of stone work, were once covered with gold leaf. The facade of the church is a good example of the Renaissance style, and its tower, of the Baroque style. The Dominican order continues its evangelical work in the Peruvian south.

Sacsayhuaman

Construction on this structure began in the second half of the 15th century by order of the ruling Pachacutec Inca but had not yet been completed upon the arrival of the Spaniards. A magnificent sample of Inca architecture, it has enormous walls of granite block forming three immense superimposed terraces in a zigzag pattern. It served religious, administrative and possibly military purposes. Its proximity to Cusco and the size of its stones (some five meters tall and weighing more than 300 tons) led to its use as a quarry for the construction of colonial Cusco. The annual June Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) takes place here.

Coricancha

Incan history is incomplete without the mention of Korikancha. Also known as Qorikancha, it is one of the most revered temples in the entire empire. Temple of the Sun, as it was known, the structure stands dedicated to worship of the Sun God. Cloisters and walkways lead to the semi-circular formation of megaliths amidst the lush green grass. Spanish invasion resulted in the destruction of the temple and the invaders built the Convent of Santo Domingo over the foundations. Closely related to the deep Inca knowledge of astronomy and solstice, the temple was limited to elite members who could pay their respects to the Gods.

Barrio de San Blas

One of the oldest in the city, this neighborhood has streets whose patterns follow those of the Incas—narrow and steep much like a medieval city. The old houses have been built upon Inca stone walls. In and between the zig-zagging streets are picturesque little squares and viewpoints of the city. This area is also known as the Barrio de los Artesanos (Artisan Quarter), and it is dotted with workshops and stores of some of the most famous Cusqueño artists such as Hilario Mendívil, Edilberto Mérida and Antonio Olave.

Iglesia de San Blas Cuzco

Located in the Plazoleta of San Blas, the district of the craftsmen, this is one of the eight parishes that the Spaniards built for the natives. This construction is modest but harmonious; its original facade that crumbled during the earthquake of 1950 was adorned with a beautifully painted mural. Its interior is decorated with paintings of the Cusquenian school, with gold leaves and sculptures. The "Púlpito" simply dazzles; it is a most extraordinary example of artistic carpentry of Spanish Churriguera style, and is carved from a single tree trunk.
