Officially inaugurated on 12 May 1995, the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) aims to facilitate cultural exchange between France and South Africa. IFAS functions on three levels: as a media centre which houses information in all mediums, relating specifically to France and Francophone countries; as an artistic body aimed at sponsoring and encouraging dialog between practitioners in various art-related fields locally and in France; and as an academic research body which organizes and coordinates intellectual discourse as well as encourages research into specific fields in the humanities. IFAS is located in the Newtown Cultural Precinct, which is an area replete with galleries, museums and restaurants.
Established in 1991, Artist Proof Studio aims to bring about social and cultural change through art. To do this, the studio trains close to 100 people annually, in the art of printmaking. Most of the trainees come from an weak economic backgrounds and the training helps them become established artists. The facility has a gallery showcasing a diverse collection of art by acclaimed artists, most of which is for sale. Drop by at the studio to learn more about their social initiatives or simply to check out the artwork on display. The Dance Factory is a unique non-profit dance institution aimed to train children in contemporary dance and ballet via a specially formatted schedule and curriculum. Financed by the Arts and Culture Trust of the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the National Lottery Distribution System, the institute provides a fine atmosphere for these kids where they are exposed to various professional choreographers and dancers. The Market Photo Workshop is an institution for photography. At this institute, you will get to learn various stunning aspects of photography that will make you see a different perspective to the subject. Established in 1991, Bag Factory was originally created to provide indigenous artists with a platform and resources to establish themselves. Today, it has grown to become a leading arts organization welcoming artists from all backgrounds and nationalities to work, collaborate and expand their knowledge of art. The center has 18 artist studios and workshop spaces where budding artists can hone their skills. Regular educational workshops and visiting artists offer excellent opportunities for the residents to broaden their horizons.
