Named for the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro National Park incorporates over 1,688 square kilometers (652 square miles) of lush green periphery around the legendary volcanic mountain. Situated way down south of the equator, the national park is home to several rare and exotic animals and birds. Owing to the highest standing mountain of its kind, that it houses at its heart, the park is one of the most visited places, not only in Kenya, but also the whole of Africa. It is also home to one of the richest biodiversity in the world, this ecosystem includes buffaloes, elephants, leopard, antelope and varied kinds of primates.
At an imposing altitude of 14967.19 feet (4562 meters), the Mount Meru gains the status of the second highest mountain in Tanzania, and the fourth highest in all of Africa. It is located to the west of the mighty and more glorified Mount Kilimanjaro and lies within the confines of the Arusha National Park. A gigantic mountain in its own right, Mount Meru is more popularly ascended by mountaineers as a acclimatization exercise for the more strenuous climb of the Mount Kilimanjaro.
