Georgetown

George Town (Georgetown) is a bustling and an important city located in Malaysia. It is the capital of Penang and is named in the honor of King George III of United Kingdom. Like the other Malaysian cities and islands, Georgetown boasts of a rich cultural heritage and is included in the prestigious list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Kapitan Keling Mosque

Located at the busy junction of Chulia Street and Pitt Street, Kapitan Keling Mosque is an eye-catching edifice with spacious gardens. Crowned by yellow domes and minarets, it is one of the largest historic mosques in town. Founded in 1801 by an Indian Muslim merchant, Cauder Mydin Merican, it was originally a rectangular building with verandas and a hipped roof. It has since been enlarged several times. British architects commissioned to work on the mosque in 1916 gave the building its current appearance.

Kek Lok Si Temple

One of the largest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia, Kek Lok Si Temple is situated close to the bustling Air Hitam market. The temple's enclave includes a prominent statue of the Guanyin. The main hall has colorful souvenir shops. A shrine filled with statues sits next to the courtyard where a large pond full of carp and tortoises are the main attractions. From the courtyard a stairway leads to the seven story pagoda of 10,000 Buddha images, displaying the essence of an eclectic mix of Chinese, Thai and Burmese architecture.

Pinang Peranakan Mansion

Located in a corner of Penang's Georgetown, the Pinang Peranakan Mansion has been proudly standing on Church Street since 1893. Arguably one of the city's most iconic mansions, it is a wonderful specimen of Straits Chinese Eclectic architecture. Today, the mansion functions as a museum that showcases the rich and varied heritage of the Peranakan Chinese people. The mansion houses an impressive collection of Peranakan relics, precious artifacts and artwork that exhibit the intricacies of Peranakan rituals and customs. It was designated as a World Heritage site in the year 2008.

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

Situated on one of Georgetown's oldest streets, this mansion was formerly the residence of Cheong Fatt Tze, a powerful Chinese trading and shipping tycoon in the late 19th century. After moving to Penang in 1880, he commissioned artisans and craftsmen from China to build a home befitting his social status. One of the largest heritage mansions in Malaysia, it was painstakingly restored by its present owners. With a built-up area of 2972.8 square meters (32000 square feet), 38 rooms, five courtyards, seven staircases and 220 windows, its layout is based on feng-shui principles. The stunning edifice also operates as a boutique hotel, letting visitors experience its grandeur.

Wat Chayamangkalaram

Looming tall, it is a landmark to this Thai Buddhist temple and with the longest reclining Buddha statue in the world. The 180-foot gold-plated statue is housed in the main shrine, a simple elongated rectangular building with a high-pitched roof. On display are the colorful, distinct Thai architectural motifs with sculptured creature-like ornaments and floral carvings painted in gold and rainbow colours. Images of the Buddha fill the interior. The temple celebrates the Thai New Year, Wesak Day, Merit Making Day and the anniversary consecration of the statue.
