Fourteen kilometres to the northwest of Quito, there is the region's only go-kart racetrack. This sporting venue is open to the public on weekends when there are races and competitions. When there are no races running, you may watch the drivers practicing for free. Now and then there are karting championships which are usually well attended by the public.
This is the largest sports arena in Quito and the country. Throughout the year there is a variable calendar of events at the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa, including the national soccer championship and other important international events. With a seating capacity for 50,000 fans, it is a traditional structure providing the necessary facilities for national and international broadcasting of sporting events. It has also hosted important concerts by local and foreign bands.
Elán is a complete sports center and spa, located in an exclusive area in the north of the city, known as Bellavista. It is a modern two-story building which comprises a swimming pool, sauna, Turkish baths, aerobics lounge, gym, bar, washrooms, showers, hairdresser's and beauty center. The gymnasium has professional instructors. They also offer swimming classes. It is a spacious and well set out place, which gives you all the benefits that you would find in any large international center of this kind. The $15 monthly membership charge gives you use of the gym and all other facilities and is well worth it.
La Vicentina is one of the most complete sports complexes in Quito, close to Coliseo Rumiñahuy and the Escuela Politécnica Nacional. It is the meeting place of the Ecuadorian sports elite and the "seedbed of champions," as it is known, comprises a coliseum for various competitions, cycle track, running track, and recreation areas. Regularly, amateur athletes can apply for various courses and seminars organized by the administration of the Palacio, which are taught by recognized national athletes.
The Coliseo Julio Cesar Hidalgo is located right in the heart of downtown Quito, not far from the populous area of La Marín. Many important non-professional basketball teams see this venue as the best place to train. There is a multiple court/pitch for basketball and football, as well as a complete gym for Olympic gymnastics. Now and then, there are basketball matches held in this place.
