Victor Emmanuel II National Monument
"Altar of the Fatherland"
The Altare della Patria ("Altar of the Fatherland") in Rome, Italy, built between 1885 and 1935 as a monument honoring Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of unified Italy. Situated between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill, the monument was completed under commission to Giuseppe Sacconi. Architecturally speaking, it was conceived as a modern platform for debating, a central square dominated by a porsch extending into a colonnade. King Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy is attributed with fostering national unity and realizing liberation from foreign invaders. The Altare della Patria has great representative and symbolic value and stands for Italian independence and unification. Hence, it is a national symbol of Italy. While being an altar to a goddess, the Altar of the Fatherland is also a shrine to the Unknown Italian Soldier, thus adopting secular credentials for Italy.
