Ciudad Colonial

Along a bend on the Ozama River's western banks, Zona Colonial, the historic segment of the city of Santo Domingo, seamlessly binds the fragments of its bygone era and embraces the urbane spirit that thrives within its old ramparts. A temporal portal of sorts, Zona Colonial allows one to travel through 500 years of Caribbean history, heritage and architecture. A zigzag tapestry of cobblestone streets lead to still-standing vestiges of the New World's European settlement – a stunning set of colonial-era monuments that straddle the historic Parque Colon, a central square in the city's midst. From the spectacular early European charm of the Alcázar de Colón that houses important works of Medieval and Renaissance art, to religious cornerstones like the 16th Century Catedral Primada de América, Zona Colonial is chock-full of weathered landmarks and fortresses. The New World's oldest paved street, Calle Las Damas is lined with several significant buildings such as the Fortaleza Ozama and the Casa de Bastidas. While the collective architectural heritage of Zona Colonial remains largely untouched and unchanged, part of this historic neighborhood is also reserved for a wealth of bars, restaurants, local shops and clubs that dot its landscape.

Plaza Central

Along with the name of the place, the facade of this modern building also bears a golden apple done in relief. The four storey building is laid out in the shape of a cross and each wing of the first floor has its own entrance. On the first two floors, you'll find a wide variety of businesses including bookstores, jewelry stores, boutiques, housewares stores and banks. The third floor has food vendors and ice cream shops, several movie theaters and one arcade. The fourth level is a parking garage.

El Mercado Modelo

Situated at an important commercial hub, this market shows off the more popular aspects of the culture. Well-known for its color and for the charismatic salesmanship of its vendors, the market offers a wide variety of goods including flowers and home-decorating items. While not exactly fancy, these products are considered to be truly Dominican. You will also find articles to help you remember your stay in this small corner of paradise. All kinds of lotions and perfumes, amulets, prayers, stamps, and pictures of saints promising love are available. Prices are excellent.

Diamond Mall

Although not big in size, this pleasantly decorated mall is one of the most exclusive and modern shopping centers in Santo Domingo. Its two floors host an array of stores selling a plethora of high-quality merchandise, including designer clothes, jewelry, shoes, lingerie, accessories and more. On the second floor there is a food court where a few restaurants, a cafe, several fast-food establishments and various ice cream parlors can be found. This mall also includes a modern cinema with Dolby sound and eight screens.

Plaza Naco

Founded in 1976, Plaza Naco was the first shopping center in the Dominican Republic, and it remains popular thanks to its central location and its more than 50 stores, which include shoe stores, clothing stores, jewelers, a bookstore and a pharmacy, among others. On the second floor there is a small but attractive food court with fast food places, typical Dominican food at Restaurante Melí Meló, a delightful cafe called Caffetté and an ice cream parlor. The Hotel Plaza Naco is also located in the shopping center.
