Museum of Military History

The Museum of Military History lies outside central Vienna and was designed by Theophil Hansen and Ludwig Förster. After the revolution of 1848, Emperor Franz Joseph I built the Arsenal to prevent Vienna's common people getting arms to fight the authorities. Today, visitors to the Arsenal can find a collection of historical memorabilia, arms, flags, uniforms and paintings of battles. These trophies give an overview of the development of Austrian military life since the beginning of the 17th Century.

Kabarett Niedermair

The decor is quite unpretentious, but nevertheless conducive to a pleasant theatergoing experience. The comedians are usually excellent and already quite popular in Austria. These artists have often already appeared in cinema or TV productions. New talents are welcome, too, but only after the boss in person has seen them on stage and is convinced that their performance skills are of high quality. After the show, have a walk to Florianigasse, where you will find lots of nice restaurants and bars.

Klosterneuburg Monastery

Overlooking the Danube River, the Klosterneuburg Monastery is a 12th-century Augustinian monastery of Roman Catholic Church located in the town of Klosterneuburg, Austria. It was founded in 1114 by Saint Leopold III of Babenberg, the patron saint of Austria, and his second wife Agnes of Germany. The monastery contains the iconic Verduner Altar made by French artist Nicholas of Verdun in 1181. A museum with a collection of Gothic and Baroque sculpture and a gallery of paintings is also located in the monastery. The monastery has long been a center of religious life, culture and scholarship for the people of Austria.

Spittelberg

Few areas in the Vorstädte (once the suburbs, but now part of the city center) have managed to preserve their original 18th- or 19th-century appearance. The exception is the Spittelberg quarter, a district consisting of half a dozen narrow, cobbled streets between Siebensterngasse and Burggasse. In decline since the late 19th-century, the area was saved from demolition in the 1970s. Its baroque and Biedermeier houses were carefully restored and many of the streets pedestrianized. The district makes for a charming walk, particularly on Saturdays when a little craft market is held in the streets around Spittelberggasse. Spittelberg also boasts one of the city's densest concentrations of bars, cafes and restaurants.

Kuffner Observatory

This history observatory was originally built for private research in 1886 by Moriz von Kuffner, who was the owner of the Ottakringer Brewery at the time. Later, it operated as an educational facility after World War II until nearby light pollution hampered scientific nighttime observations. Today the Kuffner Observatory focuses on educating the public on astronomy and maintaining the historical equipment. Some of their prime exhibits include the refractor, the heliometer, and the meridian circle.

Heiligenkreuzerhof

The square where the Heiligenkreuzerhof now stands was once, in 1030, the site of a merchants settlement. This was the home of many exporting merchants. As an estate surrounded by sturdy walls, it lay outside the Roman town fortifications. Allegedly, the free-standing buildings from the 12th-Century had been in the hands of the lower Austrian Cistercian order of the Heiligenkreuz 'Holy Cross' were only converted into a single construction after 1547. Its chapel is dedicated to Saint Bernhard and is one of the most beautiful baroque chapels standing in Vienna. Visits are only conducted with guides.
