The Schanzengraben reclaims the perimeter of Zurich's original defensive bulwarks, turning the area into a lovely tree-shaded walkway that subverts the once-imposing fortifications of Altstadt. What was once a prohibitive moat is now a tranquil canal, boats and swimmers bobbing easily in the still water that reflects the brickwork of antique fortress walls. A haven from the bustle of urban Zurich, Schanzengraben is the perfect destination for a peaceful walk through green pathways and nearby office workers enjoying a leisurely lunch.
In the heart of Zürich, this women's only bath has a view of the old town with all its imposing churches and buildings. There is a juice bar which quenches almost every thirst. Fresh sandwiches are on offer too. Massage, Shiatsu and Qigong for ladies who wish to be pampered. Opinions are split as to whether the fact that the pool isn't suited for small children is a drawback or a plus. In the evenings, the 'Barefoot Bar' is open for all—including men. As long as everyone takes their shoes off, that is. The pool can be rented for special occasions and parties.
Lake Zurich stretches over a length of about 40 kilometers; a quiet oasis despite the heavily-populated region.
Zürich's centre nestles neatly around the many bridges that span the Limmat near where it enters Lake Zürich. The river has always been of great importance to the city for trade and commerce, but today it functions more as a pulsing vein for relaxation and as an aide for navigation. From April through October you can cruise down the Limmat in a long flat boat with a glass roof and see the city from a truly different perspective. They start running at 10a and depart every half hour from behind the National Museum. Don't worry, the boats just manage to pass under the low bridges!
Often dubbed the pool for the rich and beautiful, the Utoquai lies smack bang in the middle of the popular promenade that extends from the Bellevue place along the lake. There are two lower and upper sunbathing decks, with one side of the bathing complex reserved for women and the other for men. In the middle you can sunbathe together or meet for coffee and a meal. In the evening, the 'Blue Lagoon' bar opens for a different kind of drinking experience. The Utoquai has its own hairdressing salon, and a sauna and massage studio are next door. Parts or the whole complex can be rented for special occasions during the day or in the evenings. Admission is CHF6 for adults, CHF2 for children under 16.
Close to the city centre, yet quiet, this river pool is ideal for a quick and refreshing dip during lunch breaks. If you have a bit more time, you can stroll upstream along the river Limmat and then let yourself drift 400 meters (1,312 feet) back down. On weekends, the Oberer Letten swarms with students and trendy city folk who shun the other city pools, as they are rather expensive. Some of the sunbathing decks are segregated according to gender. Snacks and drinks are available at the kiosk. Admission is free.
This is a city beach on lake Zürich with a beautiful, 250 meter (820 feet) long stretch of sand which gives the bathing experience a Mediterranean feel. There is a separate area for non-swimmers and a jumping tower with different level platforms. For children, there is a large play area. A modern self-service restaurant right by the beach and with view of the Alps caters for hungry swimmers. Further, you can shop in the boutique or enjoy a relaxing massage. Parts of the venue can be rented for special occasions or company parties during the day or in the evenings.
The nostalgic wooden structure of this river bath complex in the Wipkingen suburb offers a relaxing setting for swimmers, families and the sun-hungry alike. Lying in the quiet, almost rural, setting by the river Limmat, it seems as if one has dived back a few centuries. The view is superb as well - you won't want to surface again. Flussbad Unterer Letten has a separate non-swimmers area and a small pool for children. Snacks and drinks are on offer at the kiosk.
