Big Pit National Coal Museum

Blaenavon Pwll Mawr, or the Big Pit National Coal Museum, is one of the few places where you can experience life as a coal miner. Once a working colliery, this museum offers fascinating guided tours across the massive expanse of the mine and chronicles the workings as witnessed here. In the colliery buildings, one can find numerous interesting exhibitions that offer theoretical insight into its history. The on-site gift shop and cafeteria are worthy pit stops, offering delectable snacks and unmissable souvenirs.

Roath Park

Located to the north east of the city, this huge park is Roath's focal point. At one end of the Roath Park is an immense boating lake with islands and a floodlit lighthouse, a tribute to Captain Scott who departed for Antarctica from Cardiff. Walking on, you'll come to a garden with scores of different varieties of roses, a tropical conservatory with the most amazing colored fish and plants, children's play areas, tennis courts, a bowling green and a large recreation ground. The summer months often see special events and guided walks taking place.

Brecon Beacons National Park

The beauty of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales is intertwined by the unique facets of astonishing attractions that lie within its depths, and a storied heritage shaped by years of human civilization. The park is framed by some of the highest mountains in southern Britain, such as the eponymous Brecon Beacons range, which towers at 886 meters (2,907 feet). Swirls of mist coat the summit of this olden natural landmark, while closer to its foothills, emerald pastures tumble down in an enchanting mosaic to meet the blue Llangorse Lake. The park's boundaries are sewn by the Black Mountain to the west and the Fforest Fawr in its heartland. Amid the park's breathtaking scenery, vestiges of age-old civilizations dot the landscape, from Bronze Age menhirs and Medieval fortresses, to Neolithic tombs and world heritage sites. The Brecon Beacons National Park offers a wealth of nature trails for outdoor enthusiasts who can witness the park's boundless extremes in all its glory, from long-distance cycling trails like the Taff Trail, to a 161 kilometer (100-mile) route that extends from Abergavenny in the east to Llangadog in the west.

Castle Quarter

Castle Quarter is the site of some of the major tourist attractions, shopping arcades, shopping streets, farmer's markets, annual fairs and parks. It surrounds the awe-inspiring Cardiff Castle, built in the Medieval ages and replete with green lawns, Gothic and Victorian architecture. The Duke Street, High Street, St. Mary Street and Castle Street are the major shopping areas in this district. It is also home to three of Cardiff's six historic arcades: Castle Arcade, Duke Street Arcade and High Street Arcade, each exhibiting elements of Edwardian or Victorian architecture and full of fashion, craft, art and vintage shops. The Central Market is the major market in this area with two stories of shops selling consumer durables, foodstuffs and produce. Other important landmarks situated in Castle Quarter include the Bute Park, Cardiff Arms Park and Animal Wall.

Llandaff Fields

The enormous parkland of Lllandaff Fields is one of Cardiff’s favorite family destinations, with something to do for everyone. The never-ending avenues of towering trees and vast green open spaces ensure that this picturesque park is loved by all. For the sports enthusiast, the park has provided a number of different sport pitches, tennis courts and even a few changing rooms. Joggers, cyclists and dog walkers can delight in the smooth winding path while children have the luxury to let loose in the expertly-supervised playgrounds. Surrounding sandwich shops, delis and cafes provide delicious cuisine allowing for a special picnic in the park.

Heath Park

Heath Park covers several acres of ground close to the university hospital in Cardiff. Primarily aimed at families, there's plenty for children to do, from traditional play areas to a wildlife pond to miniature golf. Walkers can enjoy a pleasant stroll through the woodland on the outskirts of the park while local residents make good use of the open grassland as a place to walk their dogs. A small sports centre offers a multi-gym and sports hall with changing rooms, and a shop sells a range of ice creams, drinks and snacks. The park is open throughout the year.
