Acireale

"Religious Coastal Town in Italy"

In 1643 an earthquake destroyed Acireal, which then had to be totally rebuilt. There are no longer any remnants of Greek and Roman times here, despite the fact that the Romans had used the thermal springs. Because the town was rebuilt during the 17th century, it was re-created entirely in the Baroque style. The Town Hall, the Church of the San Sebastiano and the Cathedral are sights well worth visiting. Another Acireale trademark is its lively and colourful Carnival celebration.
