"An Ode to Beer"
Located in a small town south of the Arctic Circle, a tall can of beer appears a misfit in the throes of Iceland's stunning landscape. However, it marks a welcome turn of events in Iceland's alcohol history, when the ban on beer was lifted after a whopping 74 years. Iceland was subjected to a strict alcohol ban that began in 1915, applied only to beer from 1935, and ended in the summer of 1989. Decorating the front of the Viking Brewery in Akureyri, this gigantic beer can celebrates the joyous end of this desolately dry era. The beer can measures almost as much in height as the brewery building itself. Toward the left of the can, an outlet spews a beer byproduct onto the street, covering the area in a distinctive scent of the beverage.
