Masks Y Mas

"Masks and Much, Much More"

The Mexican Day of the Dead, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, is a celebration in which the living honor the departed. Skulls are its characteristic imagery, most commonly in the form of folk art figurines such as the Novia (Bride), or made of sugar and brightly decorated. Masks Y Mas store and gallery is a truly one of a kind entity in the United States, importing Day of the Dead artwork, masks and figurines, and displaying them beside all sorts of locally-themed kitsch, including t-shirts and jewelery. It successfully combines cultural education, humor and a serious social commitment; the latter evident in the frequent exhibitions of work by incarcerated artists. - Pip Lustgarten
