Midway between Darwin and Alice Springs in the heart of the Northern Territory is Lake Woods, an intermittent freshwater lake. The lake is surrounded by a conservation covenant, which protects its bird populations. Lake Woods is a significant breeding ground for plumed-whistling ducks and other waterbirds, and is known to have supported over 110,000 waterbirds at the time of flooding. Also notable are the Australian bustards and Oriental pratincoles that roam about its fringes. Part of the Important Bird Area designated by BirdLife International, Lake Woods is the only recorded breeding site for great egrets in the Northern Territory that is not located on the coast.
