"Mountain Castle"
Perched up on mount Harşena, Amasya Kalesi looks as it is a natural part of the mountain landscape. Dating back to the Hellenistic era, it was possibly built by Mithridates, a Pontus king. It is also called Harşena Castle and over its very long existence has changed hands several times. It was a base of power during the Pontic, Byzantine, Roman, Turkish and Ottoman periods. Its architectural style too is a mixture of all these kingdoms that ruled it. Featuring eight defensive tiers that lead down to the riverbank, this mighty castle was built and destroyed many times. It features four gates - Meydan, Saray, Helkıs and Maydonos. Divided into three sections, the main castle, Hatuniye Mahallesi and upper castle, there is also an subterranean tunnel. Rock armories, mosques, dungeons, Turkish baths, hamams and cistern are also part of this magnificent structure.
