"Tomb Of The Monarchs"

Kral Kaya Mezarları or the Tombs of the kings of Pontus are Pontic kings' royal necropolis. These rock-hewn tombs are carved out on the southern part of Mount Harşena by the Yeşilırmak river. Dating back to the Antiquity period, these tombs were carved off the limestone rocks of the mountain for the Pontic kings. Winding rock stairs lead you to these massive chambers and give an insight of the power of this kingdom. Though in total there are 21 such royal tombs across the slopes of this mountain, only five are known. These are of Mithridates I, Pharnaces I, Ariobarzanes, Mithridates II and Mithridates III. The biggest of all the graves are of Pharnaces I. Two of the five tombs can be accessed by crossing a tunnel. During the night, these tombs are illuminated by lights that casts an ethereal glow when you see from the river. If you can manage the strenuous climb, then this sight is worth the exertion.
