"Blue-domed Splendor"

Crowned by a rich blue dome and flanked by pale minarets, this Amman landmark is a striking piece of Islamic architecture. The inside of the dome that vaults over the prayer hall is a piece of art as well, ribbed with gilded strips that meet at the tip. All around, Quranic inscriptions adorn the 35-meter (114-feet) diameter of the dome. Within its vast halls, the mosque accommodates up to 7000 worshipers, while an additional 3000 can be accommodated in the mosque’s courtyard. Foundations for the King Abdullah I Mosque were laid in 1982 on the behest of King Hussein, who wanted to dedicate this mosque as a memorial to his grandfather, King Abdullah I of Jordan. An icon of splendor in the city of Amman, this mosque is famous as the only one in the country where all worshipers, regardless of their religion, are allowed entry.
