De Laatste Kruimel

One look through the glass facade of De Laatste Kruimel is enough to pull you in for a quick bite. The charming little bakery and cafe is a hit with the locals for its melt-in-your-mouth scones, delectable quiches and other baked goodies. There's a perennial buzz about the place throughout the day; with locals stopping by for their breakfast in the mornings while tourists start trickling in later in the day. Hearty sandwiches and other preparations are ideal for a quick lunch. Wash it down with the selection of fruit juices and smoothies or coffee and tea. The bakery utilizes organic and seasonal ingredients in their delectable specials. You can settle down at one of the little tables or simply take away to savor while walking through the charming neighborhood.

Rob Wigboldus Vishandel

This cute little deli is located very conveniently, right near Amsterdam's busy Dam Square. The small shop sells a variety of traditional Dutch speciality foods, both prepared and packaged. Rob Wigboldus Vishandel is particularly well known for its herring, a favorite Dutch snack. In addition to the herring, visitors can try a variety of other traditional fish dishes either smoked, raw, pickled or fried. You can try these local specialities on their own or have them make a sandwich out of them with traditional garnishes like different sauces, onion and pickle.

Pannenkoekenhuis Upstairs

Perched at the top of a very steep staircase, the appropriately named Pannenkoekenhuis Upstairs offers traditional Dutch pancakes to those customers brave enough to make the climb. The atmosphere is intimate to say the least, and with only five tables this pancake house is not set up for large groups. Whether you want sweet or savory pancakes, you can find something tasty on the menu such as the tempting bacon, cheese, and tomato or the traditional syrup pancake. Prices may be a little high, but the sizeable portions mean these pancakes are more than a snack. Opening hours can also be a little unpredictable.

Singel 404

A favorite among locals on their lunch breaks, Singel 404 is a down to earth little sandwich shop with a great range of lunchtime treats. The shop itself is small, a fact that belies the truly large menu. Without much room to sit and enjoy your meal, the summer months see the waterside terrace constantly full of people taking a break with a sandwich or a home-made cake. It may be popular with locals, but Singel 404 is happy to serve tourists too and menus can be found in English.

Broodje Bert

Serving steady staples of sandwiches with hearty fillings, Broodje Bert is the best cure for hangovers in the city. The namesake Broodje Bert sandwich involves Turkish bread being packed with grilled meatballs, topped with lettuce, peppers, tomatoes and drizzled in sauce creation an action packed bite, in every bite. The menu also includes options of burgers and omlets. So for a hearty meal at a great price, try the Broodje Bert.

De Supermarkt

Named for the supermarkets it finds itself between, De Supermarkt may not carry groceries, but it is still a good regular stop off in Amsterdam's chic Westerpark area. The light and airy interior makes for a welcome change from the crowded, smoky coffee shops in the city center, with regularly changed exhibitions by local artists lining the walls and relaxing downtempo music drifting through the sound system. For tobacco smokers, there is a small smoking area in the front of the coffee shop that almost guarantees to get you talking to your fellow occupants via proximity alone. Best of all, De Supermarkt's menu carries a nice mix, and the prices are very reasonable (compared to similar places just over the canal in the more central Jordaan).
