Patisserie Holtkamp Amsterdam

Patisserie Holtkamp Amsterdam is an Amsterdam tradition when it comes to baked goods and pastries; Dutch people reserve birthday cakes from Holtkamp for loved ones. Of course, the prices are somewhat high, but the flavor is more than worth the penny paid. Chocolate flavors are brought out with complementary liquors and molded into artistic creations. Fruit tarts feature fresh sweet and tart flavors that are as visually attractive as they are delicious. For those who prefer snacks above sweets, Holtkamp also has a quick turnover rate for their quiches and ragouts. Their croquettes are famous, and if you don't know what that is, all the more reason to try one from a shop whose recipe is famous!

Greenwoods

A cozy, down-to-earth tearoom in the English style, Greenwoods offers unique takes on simple fare. Everything here, from the bread used for the sandwiches to the delicious signature cheesecake is made on the premises by the friendly, efficient staff. Specials change regularly, but firm favorites are the High Tea - a selection of bite-sized sandwiches and cakes and the traditional English breakfast. Of course if you don't want to eat, you can always just lounge on the small terrace with a paper and a coffee, tea or organic juice. While Greenwoods closes early in the evening, the last few hours of the afternoon are the best time to visit, when the sun hits the terrace and the crowds of lunchtime regulars have moved on.

Café Belgique

Belgium is home to an amazing beer culture, so it is little wonder that you can sample its brews all over Amsterdam. At Cafe Belgique, you can find a range of both bottled and draught beers that offer a taste of the many styles available. The cafe itself is very small, so it's not the best choice if you're out with a large group. Take some time to experiment with the selection of drinks available, as you may end up finding a new favorite.

Int Aepjen

Located in one of the oldest wooden buildings in Amsterdam, Int Aepjen is full of history and local color. It is affectionately referred to as "the monkey bar." Folk tales say that this lively bar used to be frequented by sailors. On being unable to pay the tab, the sailors used to pay in kind by handing over monkeys from the Dutch East Indies. However, nowadays monkeys are not acceptable as a form of legal tender here, although you will still find images of them in the taproom.
