"Towers of Columns"
Thanks to the earthquakes that have repeatedly torn down Antigua, the El Carmen Church and Temple was constructed in 1638, 1686, and 1728, and is today, finally, in ruins. These are spectacular ruins, however, which still tower impressively over the 3a Avenida complete with elaborate columns, fluted archways, and the intricate relief carvings that make it instantly recognizable as Baroque-style design. The Avenida just in front of the church is considerably wider than most of the streets in Antigua, giving visitors a great perspective on the expanse of El Carmen. Attractive and dramatic lighting adds its aesthetic to the church façade in the evening.
