"Atypical Volcano"

An important member of the East African Rift, Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano towering more than 2,133 meters (7,000 feet) over the the region of Arusha. It is the only volcano on the planet that is known to spew relatively cooler, carbonatite-infused lava. Its magma has a lighter viscosity and imbibes a silvery-black hue that glistens gloriously under the sun. Overlooking the fascinating site of Engare Sero that is imprinted with close to 19,000 years old footprints of the Homininas, the volcano is believed to have watched over the early humans. Its rare lava and unique location aptly justifies the its epithet of 'Mountain of God', conferred upon it by the Maasai people.
