Athens Market: The Dimotiki Agora
"Shopping in the Raw"
When you've had enough of tourist Athens, wander down to the Dimotiki Agora Athinon (Central Athens Public Market) for a taste of the real thing – glittering fish stalls, avenues of butchers with their wares hanging under bare light bulbs, and sellers of cheese, salami, olives, almonds and pistachios. The archaeological sites of the city's ancient Greek and Roman markets are nearby, but this is living Athens at its most vital. The great, glass-roofed halls were erected in 1875-86 and house more than 250 family traders. Also check out the workers' taverns, the ironmongers and herbalists in the neighborhood, and the lively fruit and vegetable market across the road. -Alex Martin
