Cimetière St-Véran

"Cemetery in the countryside"

Just a stone's throw from the city walls, between Porte St Lazare and Porte Thiers, exists a haven of peace and tranquillity. This cemetery was highly praised as far back as 1910 by French writer and politician Maurice Barrès as “one of the most delightful cemeteries one could ever have visited in the month of June: full of birds, sunshine, welcome shade, lush greenery and a whole variety of trees… My favourites are its maritime pines overrun with ivy and the countless cypress trees.”

The great English philosopher John Stuart Mill (who died in 1873) is buried here, having lived until his dying moments next to the cemetery where his young wife (who died an accidental death) was also laid to rest. Queen Marie-Antoinette's maid is buried here too, remembered to all as the royal nanny or “berceuse des enfants de France”.
