Basilique Notre-Dame d'Avioth
"Sheer Grandeur"
The Basilique Notre-Dame d'Avioth is an unlikely sight in the small village of Avioth with its Gothic style architecture. Standing majestically in the midst of the countryside, this 14th Century church has been a historic monument since 1840. It was made a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1993. It has been a pilgrimage site for more than 800 years now when shepherds in the 12th Century found a miraculous statue of the Virgin. Also famous is its "Recevresse" a small structure before the church where donations and offerings used to be placed. Its intricately stone lace-work shows great craftsmanship. The wooden carved image of the Virgin is said to about 900 years. The church is adorned with beautiful stained glasses, finely carved walls and pillars, and figurines. Don't miss this place for its sheer beauty.
