"Replacing the Ancient"

The New Shute House was built in the Palladian style of architecture in the late 18th Century by Sir John de la Pole within the grounds of the Old House found near Axminster. On acquiring the estate, the 6th baronet believed the Old House to be out of fashion and decided to replace it. The structure has two stories and nearby stands a courtyard that incorporates the stables. The Pole family inhabited it until 1926 after which it was rented to use as a girls' school from 1933 to 1974. They then sold the house for it to be developed into many apartments. The house continues to be used as a private residence and has been reinstated to a single mansion rather than separate apartments.
