Schloss Eichhof

by 2micha

"The Abbots' Castle"

Although construction of the Eichhof Castle began in 1328, it was not completed until 1372 due to lack of funds. The castle was originally a simple, single storey, Gothic structure with a massive square keep. In the 16th Century, Eichhof Castle was transformed into a splendid Renaissance style castle with a half-timbered second level and wood-paneled interiors. The castle mainly served as a summer residence for the abbots, and was visited by Martin Luther in 1521 on his way to Wartburg. Over time, the castle has variously been used as a hunting lodge and is today home to the Hessian teaching and research institution for grassland management and forage production. Despite its varied usage and the loss of its moat and bailey system, the castle itself has remained remarkably well-preserved. While the outer walls and keep can be dated back to the 14th Century, the 16th-century additions have remained untouched as well. The courtyard of the Eichhof Castle is converted into an outdoor stage every year for the Bad Hersfeld Festival, during which comedy plays and other performances are hosted here.
