Baltimore Basilica

Considered one of the finest examples of Neoclassical architecture, the Baltimore Basilica is the nation's oldest Catholic cathedral. Begun in 1806 and completed in 1821, the cathedral was designed by Benjamin Latrobe, architect of the U.S. Capitol. With its six Corinthian columns fronting a grand portico, the cathedral resembles a Greek temple. Nine stained-glass windows fill the massive interior with light. Visitors in recent years have included Pope John Paul II and the late Mother Theresa.

Baltimore & Ohio Ellicott City Station Museum

Built in 1830, this station is the oldest surviving railroad depot in America. Named after the original point and its final destination, it is a National Historic Landmark and a museum in the present day. The museum exhibits include the original 1831 freight station with car house, a turntable, a replacement freight station, a 1927 caboose, and more. Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park

The historic park is the restored ruins of one of the oldest Girls finishing schools in the state. Opened its doors in 1837, the boarding school had a wonderful reputation for offering rare curriculum to girls. Over the years, the school was shut down, and the property served as a hotel, private residence, and nursing home. In 1995, the historic site was restored with the help of the local county. Today the partially ruined site is open to the public. Touring the Greek revival architecture and the rugged surrounds of the site creates curiosity among the visitors. A part of the site is also used as a performance ground by The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. Do visit the historic site, and if you are lucky, catch a play or two on your visit.

Ellicott City Firehouse Museum

Ellicott City Firehouse Museum is a wonderful museum, served the actual firehouse, built in 1889. Home to rare collections and exhibits that provides insightful details about the challenges faced by the firefighter in the 19th and 20th century. This charming museum includes tools and objects used during this time. This specialty museum is located in downtown Ellicott City. Visitors can tour the museum and marvel at the collections.

Thomas Isaac Log Cabin

Thomas Isaac Log Cabin is one of the earliest constructs in the area. Thomas Isaac, one of the early settlers from Europe, built this charming-looking cabin in the 1780s. This historic structure is considered a landmark is open for visitors. Tour the historic site and learn about local history. Visitors can come on weekends for tours.

St. Jude Shrine

Entrusted to the Pallottine Priests and Brothers by the Archbishop of Baltimore in 1917, the St. Jude Shrine is the center of St. Jude Devotions in the United States. St. Jude Thaddeus has been dubbed "The Forgotten Saint" due to the actions of Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Jesus. Unlike Judas Iscariot, St. Jude Thaddeus died a martyr and his remains are in the great basilica of St. Peter in Rome. He is considered the patron saint for those in dire need. After an increase of St. Jude Devotions following WWII, the Pallottines established regular novena services to honor the saint. Call the shrine for timings. The popularity of the shrine has skyrocketed, attracting both local and nationwide parishioners.
