Holy Rosary Church

Also called Kalawar Church after the Thai translation of Calvary, the hill on which Jesus was crucified, the Holy Rosary Church is actually the third church on the site, and was last rebuilt in 1891. The gothic style, towering spire and cream exterior make it an easily identifiable landmark on the Bangkok side of the Chao Phraya River. Inside are some fine stained glass windows, a gilded ceiling and a large wooden carving of the Virgin Mary. In the grounds is a small rock garden with another statue of the Virgin Mary. Close by, you'll find the Kularb Wattana School and Kulab Wittaya School, combining with the church to create an environment for study and religion, which often go hand in hand in Thailand. Services on Sunday are in Thai and Chinese. The Church is next to River City shopping center and convenient from the river ferry pier, Tha Si Phraya. -AH
