In the West Wing of the Barbados Parliament Building is a wonderful gallery and museum dedicated to the development of democracy in Barbados and the ten national heroes of the island. Barbados has the third oldest Parliament in the British Commonwealth, with parliamentary rule dating from 1639. The museum provides insight into the evolution of this system, from its days of colonial rule to the modern systems of today. In 1998, Barbados chose ten stalwarts, whose struggle created fundamental change in the development of the island, to become national heroes. Their individual stories and the importance of their contributions to the island are demonstrated in interactive displays in the National Heroes Gallery, one of the best history museums on the island. -Marsilyn Browne
