Located on the mountain of Montserrat, the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey is an important pilgrimage site as well as a popular tourist attraction for its rich history, remarkable architecture, valuable artworks, religious significance and stunning valley views. Visitors can reach the beautiful abbey via rail, road, cable car or hike up to the mountain through well marked trails. The basilica is stunningly decorated and is home to the famous Black Madonna statue as well as a religious art museum showcasing paintings, archaeological artifacts, gold work items and modern sculptures. The sunset from the mountain summit is a breath taking sight and is very popular among Catalonians who make a trip here once in their lives to witness it.
Located in the midst of a dense forest in Montnegre i el Corredor, Santuari del Corredor is a hermitage dating back to the 16th Century and a popular pilgrimage site. Today it houses a restaurant of the same name serving traditional Spanish cuisine. Go there to sample delicacies like rabbits, snails, lamb, cheeks etc.
Temple dels Homes is a magnificent structure punctuating Piera’s picturesque landscape. Constructed by local artist Julio M. Merino, this unique landmark showcases influences of the baroque school of architecture. Admire at the vertigo-inducing tower, its ornate carving and colorful mosaic. This temple, located a short distance from Barcelona, is worth a visit.
