Chiesa di Santa Chiara

by Foto-Rabe

"Not Far from the Sea - A Link with the Orient"

This is a closed church that can only be visited by prior arrangement with the cathedral. It is of very ancient origin and is built on the same spot as the German Chiesa della Madonna, and was a point where Teutonic cavaliers would meet up from abroad, before leaving for the Orient. In 1539, the church was rebuilt with contributions from the Queen of Poland and the Duchess of Bari, Bona Sforza. The interior is in Baroque style and the decor, which was formerly in majolica, is now in beautiful polychrome marble.
