Basiliskenbrunnen

"Mythical Source of Water"

It is not clear whether the fascination with the creature or the similarity of its name with the city was the key reason for the decision. In any case the basilisk was chosen as the heraldic supporter of the city's coat of arms in 1448. In the following years around 30 basilisk fountains were erected in Basle. The fountain in the Augustinergasse is one of the oldest examples. On the colourful, richly decorated fountain columns sits a hybrid creature, half cockerel, half serpent. In its claws it holds the city's coat of arms, the black crosier on a white field.
