As the only Kazoo manufacturing company in the United States, this one-story musical toy facility is also a museum. Here kids and adults get a chance to make their own kazoos, too. Educational and entertaining, this museum shows that there's more to the little plastic sound maker. Invented in 1883 by Warren Herbert Frost, a kazoo is shaped like a submarine that, when blown into, modifies a person's voice. It is both a professional device and one that can be played just for fun. Located in a plain warehouse, The Kazoo Factory museum has an extensive display of early designs, materials and historic pieces. The factory tour shows how a kazoo is made in different styles, sizes and colors.

Step back in time to a country store that appears to exist in a former old-fashioned service station from the 1920s. Packed within one room are shelves and tables filled with Carolina rice, ciders, jams, stone ground grits, preserves, pickles and relishes. Other items include packages of baking supplies and jars of chutneys, dips, sauces, salad dressing and syrups. There are also fresh-baked pies, cookies, books and gift baskets. Brightly lit, colorful and sparkling clean, visitors can taste free samples of the homemade products in this family-owned store. It's tempting to purchase one of everything, and those who can't resist stopping are sure to leave with something. A sister store a few miles away is located at 81 Charleston Highway, Yemassee. Parking is on site. Mail order is available online. Visit the website for recipes. -Natasha Lawrence
