Beihai Park

Built for the reigning emperors of the Khan dynasty, this lush, green park was once used for recreation by the royal family. The gardens were first constructed in the 11th century, though they were not opened to the public until 1925. Renowned for being the home of one of the largest historical Chinese gardens in existence, the park also contains numerous historical temples and structures. Visitors can explore the park's picturesque gardens, lake, and famous White Pagoda on Jade Flower Island. Kids will love riding in a paddle boat around the serene lake or having a picnic in the shade.

Summer Palace

Located 15 kilometers (9 miles) from central Beijing, this World Heritage Site is a breathtaking display of ancient art and architecture, lush royal gardens, and amazing vistas. This vast complex of luxuriant greenery is studded with ancient architectural gems and pristine lakes, a triumphant showcase of traditional landscape design. The Summer Palace consists of numerous pavilions, towers, bridges, and corridors, while the gardens are some of the best preserved in China. First built by the Qing Dynasty in 1750 as the 'Garden of Clear Ripples', the Palace suffered hefty damages in the war of 1860 and then again in 1900, only to be restored to its former resplendent glory a few years later. Its origins, though, can be traced back to 1153, when the capital of the Jin Dynasty was moved here. The Summer Palace is also known for its impressive 17-arch bridge and the Long Corridor, which is decorated with brightly colored paintings that depict Chinese mythological tales. Akin to a jewel box with its treasures laid bare, the Summer Palace is an enchanting medley of unforgettable sights.

Fragrant Hills Park

Fragrant Hills is one of the most popular parks in Beijing. Aside from its pine, maple, and persimmon trees, the park is home to a large number of traditional and cultural buildings. The park's first building was constructed during the Jing Dynasty in 1186, while other structures were in various eras. Highlights include The Pagoda of the Zongjing Monastery, Bright Temple, and Fragrant Temple. Other features include Yanjing Lake and Incense Burner Peak, the park's highest peak for which it is named.

Beijing Botanical Garden

Spanning 400 hectares (988 acres), the Beijing Botanical Garden is a rather large breath of fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. The park was established in 1955 and includes dozens of gardens and several Buddhist temples. 6,000 exotic plant species call the park home, including 500 species of flowers that are truly a wonderful sight to behold. Visitors can wander through the serene gardens, explore the inner workings of the hothouses, and enjoy a peaceful afternoon sitting by the park's waterfalls and ponds.

Purple Bamboo Park

Located near the National Library of China, the Purple Bamboo Park, sometimes called Black Bamboo Park, is a traditionally landscaped garden. As the name suggests, the garden has a large variety of bamboo, more than 50 species altogether, the most prominent being the black bamboo. It covers an area of 48 hectares (119 acres), including three lakes and two small islands on the lakes. Five arched bridges connect the lakes, isles and main garden area with scattered corridors and pavilions throughout.

Beigong National Forest Park

Located in the Fengtai District west of central Beijing, Beigong National Forest Park is a popular destination for enjoying the great outdoors near the city. A focal point in the park's center is Hulu Lake, surrounded by beautiful trees that change vivid colors with the seasons. Other standout features of the park include an orchard where fruit picking is a famous activity and a water park. It is best to visit this park in autumn, as the trees are awash in vibrant hues of yellows or red that make for a stunning sight.
