Located along the western side of the Balkan mountains, the Belogradchik Rocks comprises of sandstone and other colorful rocks. The total length of the cave is about 2.5 kilometers (1.55343 miles) and consists of one of the largest inland lakes the Rashiba lake. The cave is estimated to be about 15 million years old. There are prehistoric paintings, the Grotta de Cervi, bones from prehistoric species of cave bears and cave hyenas.

It consists of parts of once high ramparts, thermal baths and triangular or pentagon-shaped towers with pointed edges. Two Roman necropolis and several treasures such as marble statues and reliefs, altars, bronze and glass ceramics, jewelry, money etc. were found in the excavations. Part of these are displayed in museums in Belgrade, Zajecar, Nis and Knjazevac and part of them are still present on-site.

A peak shared by Serbia and Bulgaria, Midžor soars high above the windblown mountainous scenery of the Balkans, towering at a height of 2,169 meters (7,116 feet). It lays claim to the title of the highest peak in the Western Balkan mountains. Located a few miles away from Chiprovtsi, the Chiprovtsi Monastery is a historical landmark and a cultural monument of the region. Believed to be originally built in the 10th Century, the monastery was destroyed on numerous occasions throughout the ages with the current structure constructed only in 1829. The complex consists of a church, a small cemetery, cloisters and a tower with a ossuary, belfry and a chapel.
