"Architectural Delight"

Once a humble chapel, Berner Münster now towers over the charming landscape of the Old City of Bern and the sparkling Aare River. Construction began in 1421 under architect Matthäus Ensinger, though the project was not completed until 1893. This basilica is a magnificent embodiment of Late Gothic architecture and features one of Switzerland's highest church towers. Its most distinguishing feature is the gorgeous spire that overlooks the surrounding area. Also iconic is the intricately sculpted portrayal of the Last Judgement perched atop the site's main entrance. It contains around 200 Gothic-style wood and stone figurines, 170 smaller 15th-century original ones, and a number of other carvings. The Münster is further adorned with an antiquated pulpit, carved choir stalls, majestic bell tower, intricate stained glass windows, high vaulted ceilings, and soulful painted sculptures. A spectacular relic of Switzerland's Late Middle Ages, this edifice has been proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, underlining the indelible architectural and cultural spirit of Bern.
