Innere Neustadt was constructed between 1255 and 1260 during the region's second extension. Bärenplatz is an important part of this historic area of Switzerland. In the 13th Century, the site of the square was a trench. The plaza's center section was called Viehmarkt. During the 17th Century, the square's southern section served as a hay and wood trading center. It was first mentioned as Bärenplatz in the 19th Century. Today, Bärenplatz is an integral section of the Old City UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site.
