Adding to the quaint charm of Bern's Old Town is six kilometers (four miles) of a medieval-style sheltered shopping trail. Designed to protect shoppers from all kinds of weather, the covered shopping street dates back to early days of the city's development. At this time, the Lauben was devised to allow traders to sell their wares regardless of the weather. Today, this trail extends from Kramgasse to Spitalgasse, and is dotted with small shops, markets, independent stores selling chocolates, bon bons and other local products, as well as modish boutiques, antique purveyors, and jewelers.
