No longer called Simpson Desert National Park, Munga-Thirri still exemplifies Australia's outback. It is the largest national park in Queensland, comprising more than 10,000 square kilometers (3,861 square miles) of fiery red desert. Large sand dunes that began forming 30,000 years ago draw some of the biggest crowds in the park, followed closely by the site's salt lakes. These natural wonders are best enjoyed from the comfort of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, which is necessary to navigate the stunning albeit harsh terrain. Look out for dingos, geckos, grasswrens, and feral camels as you drive through Munga-Thirri National Park on your own personal safari. Camping is also possible, but please note that fees apply.
