"On the Banks of Euphrates"
Constructed on a limestone crag standing tall at 400 feet (121.92 meters) on Euphrates river's east bank, Birecik is a district and town in Turkey's Şanlıurfa province. The Encyclopedia Britannica of 1911 mentions the town along with the historic settlement of Apamea and identifies it as being situated opposite to the town of Zeugma. Destroyed in the 14th Century by Timur Leng, Birecik was the site of the massacre of Armenians in the year 1895. Today, the bridge by the same name over the Euphrates river remains a popular halt on the route to Gaziantep from Şanlıurfa.
