Ironbridge Gorge - Canyon
"Ancient Engineering Wonder"
Abraham Darby III had a cast iron bridge built over the River Severn for the transport of goods. Its length of 60 m made it the longest free-standing bridge construction of the time and it was opened on 1st January 1781. This was the starting gun for industrialisation. Within a few years blast furnaces with smoking chimney stacks were in operation around Ironbridge. Now numerous museums concerned with the industrial past can be visited there.
