"A Monument With A Strange Story"

Who put Bella in the Wych Elm? These obscure words were found on the Wychbury Obelisk, thus bringing it out in the spotlight. This 84 feet (25.60 meters) high structure was built in 1758 by Lord Lyttelton. But it was not until the 1970's that this monument received its fame. The grafitti which asks the spooky question was formed after a group of four boys found a woman's skeleton in the nearby woods. Since then, the Obelisk is said to be haunted. The monument is quite dilapidated and was even in the debate to be demolished until 2011 when it was fully restored. Those words still remain a mystery.
