"A Historic Local Landmark"
The Pulestone Cross or the Butter Cross, as it is sometimes called is located near the St. Nicholas Church. The names are confused as the original cross standing here is the Pulestone Cross and not the Butter Cross. The Butter Cross that was built here in 1665 by Richard Barnfield was destroyed in a fire. Even the second Butter Cross that was built here in 1668 was demolished when the nearby town hall and market were built. The Pulestone Cross is a memorial cross built in for Sir Roger de Puleston, a tax collector for the King, after he was killed in the Welsh uprising. The Cross is a significant landmark of the town and its history.
