Sutton Park

Sutton Park is a beautiful reserve sheathed in aged woodlands, heaths, wetlands and sparkling lakes, teeming with kestrels, pheasants, plovers, buntings and other wildlife. One of the largest in the United Kingdom, this expansive urban park is also home to recreational facilities for cycling, pony rides, trekking and boating. Cattle graze on grass-laden hills while the Sutton Park Line slices through, lending this National Nature Reserve an old-world charm. Although the park encompasses several pools like Powell's Pool, Bracebridge Pool and the Longmoor Pool, it is the Wyndley Pool which is the oldest and perhaps, the most prized. Volunteer conservationists and park rangers help to keep this reserve in order and cattle grazing has been reintroduced in order to keep young birch trees from entirely taking over the land. Sutton Park has also a recognized Scheduled Ancient Monument and Site of Special Scientific Interest.

River Arrow Nature Reserve

It may seem unreal that a site can provide a wide variety of habitat and wildlife. But River Arrow Nature Reserve in Alcester makes it happen. Visitors can explore the wide range of habitats including pond, river, grassland and woodland and also take long walks on the river bank. There is a voluntary group called The Friends of the River Arrow Nature Reserve group which was formed in 2006 and takes care of the day to day maintenance of the reserve, undertakes small projects and promotes the reserve in the wider community. It is also home to various species like Small Teasel, Chub, Pike, Kingfisher, Slow-worm, Moorhen, Grey Wagtail, Small Teasel, Purple-loosestrife and Grass Snake.

Overall, it is a great spot for picnics and family outings where you can relax and take pleasure of the beauty around and also enjoy the park activities.

Cannock Chase Forest

Besides being reputed as a land covered with beautiful pine trees, this forest is also rich in mining and military history. The Cannock Chase Forest is also a popular events venue owing to its amazing scenic beauty. While the natural beauty is undisputed, the forests have also gained some reputation thanks to some mysterious sightings of wildlife.

Chasewater Railway

The Chasewater Railway is a railway system that operates heritage steam and diesel trains on holidays throughout the year. This includes Bank Holiday Mondays, Sundays, most Saturdays Easter to October and certain weekdays though summer. Along with taking a ride on their steam engines, there are other interesting activities to indulge you in the day. If booked in advance, they even offer you a chance to drive your very own steam engine!

Middleton Lakes RSPB Reserve

Summer's the ideal time to spot a long, slithery snake swimming in the lake or lazing in the sun, while the baby ducklings wade in the water! Tucked away in the RSPB reserve, this site was acquired by them in 2007, and restoration work was done to make it fully accessible to the public. Middleton Lakes is famous for the numerous birds that fly in from all around to set up home there through the year. So make sure you keep time in the day to do a little bird-watching and spot some amazing, colorful ones fly right past you! Other activities include getting up close and personal with nature by climbing on the trees and playing around in the grassy areas.
