This is the ideal park for the entire family, offering a variety of facilities including boating lakes, playgrounds, tennis courts, tropical greenhouses and nature conservation areas. It is also the home of the Midland Arts Centre. A walking/bicycling route winds through the grounds that has recently been extended. The park also plays host to a variety of concerts, performances and the annual Fireworks Fantasia.

Spanning the borders of Worcestershire and Shropshire, Wyre Forest is spread across sprawling swathes of woodland. This forest is set amid the backdrop of rolling hills, aged woods, orchards, and a fringe of quaint villages, safari routes and charming market towns like Kidderminster and Bewdly. From owls and wood warblers to lovely pearl-bordered butterflies, this teeming forest is particularly famed for the enormous melange of wildlife it shelters in its depth. The forest is also replete with opportunities for adventure, featuring zip lines, Tarzan swings and more. A naturalist's dream and a wonderland for the intrepid adventurer, this mystical forest is criss-crossed with hiking trails while the gorgeous Dowles Brook pierces through its heart.

This 80-hectare (200-acre) safari park is located less than a 60-minute drive from Birmingham. It will take you about an hour to drive through the animal reserves, where you can see elephants, rhinos, giraffes, lions, monkeys, wallabies and tigers. The amusement park has many different rides, and a wristband ticket that gives you access to all of them. Other attractions include a seal aquarium, reptile house and sea lion show. There are also plenty of themed places to eat and buy souvenirs.

A fun day out for children, especially since the emphasis is on close contact with the animals. Youngsters can hold newly-hatched chicks, take a pony ride and help to feed the animals. All your familiar farmyard friends are here, and some less familiar in the form of rare breeds. There are also demonstrations of traditional crafts associated with the farm, such as wool spinning. The farm is both interesting and educational and parents should enjoy it too.

A short drive north-east of Birmingham brings you to this well-respected zoo known as Twycross Zoo on the Warwickshire/Leicestershire border. It is home to a wide range of animals and places a strong emphasis on conservation. Its breeding programs for endangered species are helping to conserve wild species on the brink of extinction. Animals range from lions to parrots and there is a playground and picnic area as well as a gift shop. There are also feeding shows, special exhibitions and regular talks during the summer season.

Journey into the Moseley Park and embrace the placid beauty of the green land, ponds and trees. This private park allows you to wander through time as this green park has remained untouched for hundreds of years. The park has special attractions including an ice house which were primitive refrigerators built in the ground to store food and packed with snow and ice of winters. The park is also host to the a number of local festival including a summer folk festival that further brings an interest to the park's history.

These fine gardens, opened in 1832, were designed by John Claudius Loudon, a leading garden planner, and horticultural journalist. The gardens offer you the chance to see some of the most beautiful greenery in the world along with stunning glasshouses. Attractions besides plants include indoor aviaries, a restaurant with a fantastic view of the gardens, a children's adventure playground, a gift shop and plant center and a gallery displaying work by local artists.

As it's a council-run course, anyone can play at this pleasant municipal golf course to the north-east of the city centre. A full 18 holes await, and you will find a range of amenities for the keen golfer including a golf shop with equipment for sale or hire. The course itself is a mature one, with fairways lined with deciduous trees and gorse bushes. It is not too daunting for the beginner, yet still offers a good round for the more experienced player. There is also assistance available for the disabled and guide dogs are welcome. Call ahead for timings.
